Объяснение
Husayn Boyqaro retreats and lives gloomily in Maymana. Navoiy advises him on a plan to retake Herat by surprise and stresses keeping it secret. On the way the sultan visits the dervish Bobo Xokiy in his cave; the dervish hands him a spear and thrusts it toward Herat. At night the army enters the city and catches Mirzo Yodgor asleep: the enemy puts up no resistance. When the soldiers hesitate to climb the hill to the pavilion where Yodgor sleeps, Navoiy asks leave and goes up by another path, holding his sword like a walking stick; with his servant Boboali he enters the pavilion and seizes Yodgor. The sultan then appoints Navoiy keeper of the seal and then amir; at the first sealing the poet places his seal so that no amir can place his lower. At Navoiy’s gathering the Persian-favouring Mavlono Shahobiddin and Binoiy belittle Turkic poetry; Navoiy, without denying the worth of Persian, warmly defends writing in his people’s own language. At the end he offers the young scholar Sultonmurod a teaching post in a madrasa and says knowledge must not be sold, then receives petitioners and helps a peasant who lost his horse.
Примеры
Example: Navoiy’s answer to “Foniy or Navoiy?” reveals his view of mother tongue: he loves his own language yet does not deny Persian – he speaks as a poet who knows both.
Example: when the young secretary wants to turn some petitioners away, Navoiy first rebukes him with irony, then gently explains that treating people this way is not wise. The episode shows his sense of responsibility to the people and his skill as a teacher.
Работа в классе
Divide the class into two groups: one takes the Persian-favouring side, the other defends writing in the mother tongue from Navoiy’s view. Each prepares three arguments based on events in the text.
Упражнения
1
How is Mirzo Yodgor captured in Herat?
Husayn Boyqaro’s army enters at night and seizes him from sleep; Navoiy leads the way up the hill.
2
Where does Navoiy place his seal and why does it amaze people?
He places it so high that other amirs can only place theirs below it.
3
Does Navoiy deny the Persian language? Write your view from the text.
No: he acknowledges Persian’s power but says one must write in the people’s own language.
4
Why does Navoiy ask Sultonmurod not to sell his knowledge for wealth?
Because knowledge must be given to the people and grow; he likens it to a living tree, and selling it for wealth lowers its worth.
