Объяснение
The ghazal with the radif “Ustina” counts among the most famous works of Uzbek classical literature. In the matla the beloved’s brow is likened to the Arabic letter “nun” and her eye to “sod”; written together the two letters form the word “nas” (decree), meaning that the brow and the executioner-eye have issued the decree to execute the lover. Making a word out of letters and applying it to a picture is Ogahiy’s novelty. In the second couplet her stature is like a boxwood tree and her face like a rose: “a rose grafted on a boxwood”; the order of sentence parts is changed for poetic reasons (inversion). In the third couplet coquetry, charm and glances attack the lover without pause; in the sixth, exaggeration reaches its highest level: even if the heavens rained a thousand Besutun mountains on Farhod, it would not equal a thousandth of the lover’s sorrow. In the ghazal “Qish” the word “qish” serves as rhyme and radif, and the poet says no winter was ever harsher than this one; he depicts the hardship of the old and weak who cannot find warm clothes while the rich protect themselves from the cold with furs.
Примеры
Example: in the opening couplet of the ghazal, “mushkin” means black and also musky-fragrant; brow and eye are both black and both bring black days to the lover. The words black, executioner, execution and decree link up and form tanosub.
Example: in the sixth couplet the lover says his grief is a thousand times heavier than Farhod’s suffering. This is the limit of exaggeration; it shows the force of love’s pain.
Работа в классе
In groups analyse the third and fifth couplets of the “Ustina” ghazal: which words are linked (tanosub), where is exaggeration? Present the results to the class.
Упражнения
1
In the first couplet to which letters are brow and eye compared, and what word do they form together?
Brow – “nun”, eye – “sod”; together they form “nas” (decree).
2
What does the picture of a rose grafted on a boxwood in the second couplet mean?
The beloved has a rose-like face on a boxwood-straight stature – her figure and face are in harmony.
3
In which couplet is exaggeration at its highest and why can this be said?
In the sixth: even a thousand Besutun mountains falling on Farhod would not equal a thousandth of the lover’s grief – though Farhod’s suffering was already boundless.
4
What aim do you think Ogahiy had in the ghazal “Qish”?
To draw attention to the plight of the old and weak poor suffering in the cold and to urge the ruler to help them.
