Jahon Otin Uvaysiy
Uvaysiy was born in Marg‘ilon in 1779 into an educated family; her father wrote poems in Uzbek and Tajik. Her pen name “Uvaysiy” is interpreted as alluding to the love of the saint Uvays Qaraniy for the Prophet, felt without ever seeing him. After her husband Hojixon died young, she raised her children alone, worked as a schoolteacher and wrote at the court of Nodirabegim. In 1842 the emir of Bukhara, Nasrullo, took Qo‘qon and had Nodirabegim executed, after which the poetess returned to Marg‘ilon and died around 1845. She wrote in the genres of ghazal, muxammas, dastan and chiston; the ghazal “Sog‘indim” reflects the anguish of a mother parted from her child, and the chiston “Anor” is analysed as reflecting the life of palace maidens.
