Devices at home and school: an email and word families
An email has a subject line, a greeting, the message, a closing and a name. This one tells a cousin about devices at home. The email on page 18 of your book is another one: read it too. Devices have names that are made of two small words, called a word family. Take a root word and add other words to it. Board: keyboard, noticeboard, cardboard. Work: homework, schoolwork, teamwork. Phone: headphones, microphone, smartphone. Web: website, webcam, webpage. When you meet a long word, split it in two: key + board. The parts help you guess the meaning. Use a dictionary to check.
| Root | Word family |
|---|---|
| board | keyboard, noticeboard, cardboard |
| work | homework, schoolwork, teamwork |
| phone | headphones, microphone, smartphone |
| web | website, webcam, webpage |
Subject: Our computer corner
Hi Hoda,
How are you? I want to tell you about the new computer corner in our living room. We have a computer with a big screen, a keyboard and a mouse. Dad bought a webcam, so I can see Grandma when we call her. We also have headphones, because Mum works in the same room and needs quiet. There is a printer too, and I print my science pictures on it every Thursday. We never use the computer after nine o’clock at night. Do you have a computer corner at home? Write back soon!
Best wishes,
Mostafa

Make a family. Choose a root word: class, book or play. Write as many longer words as you can with a grown-up (for example classroom, classmate; notebook, bookshop; playground). Check them in a dictionary.
