Explanation

A global citizen is a person who cares about other people and the planet, near and far. Read the handbook on page 88 of your book. Then read our own guide to a park. A guide gives rules: what we must do and what we mustn’t do. Must means it is necessary or a rule. Mustn’t means it is not allowed. After must we use a short verb: We must respect each other. We mustn’t shout. Respect means treating others and places well. To encourage means to give someone hope: We encourage our friends. Something unfair treats people differently without a reason. In your community you can help in small ways.

Worked examples

Welcome to Riverside Park! Our park belongs to everyone, so we must respect each other and protect the plants and the water. We must put rubbish in the bins. We must keep the paths clear for walkers. We mustn’t pick the flowers, and we mustn’t feed the birds with sweets. Children must stay with a grown-up near the river. Volunteers help us on Fridays, and everyone is welcome to join. Together we make our park a happy place for all.

Read and listen to the park guide.
Guard

Hello! Remember: you mustn’t pick the flowers.

Dina

Sorry! I only wanted to smell them.

Guard

You can smell them. And you must keep your rubbish for the bin.

Dina

I will. I want to protect the park.

Listen. A guard and a child talk.
treeflowerbird
Look. Things in a park. Say: You must protect the trees. You mustn’t break the flowers.
Think–Pair–Share. Think about a good citizen. Ask your partner: How do you help your school or your street?
Class activity

Rules for a place. Choose a place (a library, a park, a swimming pool, a bus). With a grown-up write three things you must do and three you mustn’t do there. Read them aloud.
