Units 7–9: aches, animals and could
We say I have a headache, I have a toothache, I have an earache and I have a backache. We also say I have a cough and I have a sore throat. When something hurts, tell a grown-up, and a doctor can help. Now think about animals. A bat can fly. A penguin can’t fly, but it can swim well. A kangaroo can jump. We use could and couldn’t for the past: When I had a sore throat, I couldn’t talk well. Whales and dolphins are mammals.
| Animal | Can | Can’t |
|---|---|---|
| bat | fly at night | swim |
| penguin | swim well | fly |
| kangaroo | jump high | fly |
| dolphin | swim fast | walk on land |
What’s the matter?
I have a headache and a sore throat.
I will call your mum. Please sit here and rest.
Thank you.
Penguins are birds, but they can’t fly. They can swim very fast. Bats are mammals, and they can fly. Last week Karim had a cough, so he couldn’t sing in class. This week he can sing again.
Doctor and animals. One person says an ache or a cough, for example: I have an earache. The other says what a friend could do: Tell a grown-up. Then change: one person acts an animal and the other says: It can … but it can’t … .
