Pie charts and my choice of job
Connect Primary 5 Term 1, Unit 5: pp. 80–87
GoalRead a pie chart and write about a job I want and a job I do not want.
New words
pie chart · a circle that shows information in slicessurvey · asking many people the same questionpercent · a part of 100popular · liked by many peoplebecause · a word that gives a reason
Explanation
A pie chart shows information as slices of a circle. The whole circle is 100%. A bigger slice means a bigger number. 50% is a half and 25% is a quarter. In a class survey, 20 children each chose one favourite job: doctor 9, teacher 6, pilot 3 and artist 2. We add: 9 + 6 + 3 + 2 = 20. Then we find each part of 100: 9 out of 20 is 45%, 6 out of 20 is 30%, 3 out of 20 is 15% and 2 out of 20 is 10%. Look at the pie chart.
Worked examples
Hoda
Which job is the most popular?
Karim
Doctor. 45% of the class chose it.
Hoda
Which job is the least popular?
Karim
Artist. Only 10% chose it.
Listen. Hoda and Karim read the chart.
I want to be a vet because I love animals. I am good at looking after our cat. I don’t want to be a pilot because I don’t like flying, and I want to be at home with my family.
Read and listen to the model paragraph.
I want to be a … because …→I am good at …→I don’t want to be a … because …
Look at the plan for the paragraph.
Now you. Say one job you want and one job you do not want. Give a reason with because.
Class activity
Family survey. Ask ten people: ‘What is your favourite job?’ Make a mark for each answer on paper. Count the marks. Say: The most popular job is … . Then work out the percent with a grown-up: the number of marks ÷ 10 × 100.
