Shops, hotels and science jobs
Discover P2 Term 1: Axis 1, Chapter 3
GoalTell what workers do in shops, in tourism and in science and engineering.
New words
customer · a person who buys somethingtourist · a visitor who travels to enjoy a placescientist · a person who tests ideas to learn how things workprogrammer · a person who writes instructions for a computer
Explanation
In a shop, the seller helps customers find things, says the price, takes the money and gives back the change. Tourism workers help tourists who visit Egypt. A hotel worker welcomes guests. A guide tells visitors about places. A driver takes them safely from place to place. In science and engineering, a scientist tests ideas, an engineer designs things like bridges, and a programmer writes instructions for a computer. All these workers use reading, talking and maths.
Worked examples
A seller sells a notebook for 6 LE. Habiba pays 10 LE. The seller gives back 10 − 6 = 4 LE.
A guide takes visitors to see the pyramids at Giza and tells them about the old buildings. A driver takes them there safely.
An engineer draws a plan for a small bridge over a canal. She uses a ruler and maths to measure.
Class activity
Play shop with a family member. Make price tags from 1 to 5 LE for three things at home. Take turns to be the seller and the customer. The customer pays with a bigger number and the seller gives the change.
