Explanation

Water is very important. People, animals and plants all need it. Most of the water in Egypt comes from the Nile. Rain is rare in most places, so farmers bring Nile water to their fields in canals. Animals drink from the river and the canals. For our homes, a water station takes water from the river and cleans it. Then the water travels through pipes under the ground to the taps in our homes and schools. Some places in the desert get water from wells. We use water to drink, cook, wash, clean and water plants. We must never drink water straight from the river or a canal.

Worked examples
Mariam’s grandfather opens a gate in the canal. Water runs into his wheat field.
Animals drink at the edge of the river: a buffalo, a donkey and a goose.

We use water in many ways: to drink, to wash, to clean and to help plants grow.
Class activity

Follow the water. With a grown-up, find the taps in your home and count them. Ask: where does our water come from? How does it get here? Draw the journey from the river to your tap. Then list five ways your family uses water in one day.
