Boats of the Nile
Discover P2 Term 2: Axis 3, Chapter 1
GoalName some boats of the Nile, tell how each one moves, and say what cargo is.
New words
felucca · a boat with a tall sail that the wind pushesoar · a long flat stick that people push through the water to move a boatcargo · the things a boat carries
Explanation
People have used boats on the Nile for a very long time. A felucca has a tall sail. The wind pushes the sail and the boat moves along the river. A small rowing boat moves when people pull the oars through the water. Big river boats have engines. Boats carry people from one place to another. They also carry cargo, such as fruit, sacks and bricks. For many people the river is like a road.
Worked examples
Omar’s felucca has a big sail. When the wind blows, the sail fills and the boat glides along the river.
Mina’s uncle rows a small boat. He carries baskets of oranges across the river to the market.
A big river boat carries visitors from one city to another. The visitors are the passengers.
