Total revenue, profit and loss
Textbook: pp. 29–32
GoalKnow the concepts of total revenue, profit, loss and net profit, calculate with TR = p · q and P = TR − TC, and explain the economic role of profit and how it is used.
New words
total revenue · yalpi daromadprofit · foydaloss · zararinvestment · investitsiya (sarmoya)
Explanation
Total revenue (TR) is a firm’s total money receipts from selling goods and services over a period; it is found by multiplying the selling price p by the quantity sold q: TR = p · q. Profit (P) is the difference between total revenue and total cost: P = TR − TC; if this difference is negative, the firm has made a loss. What remains after taxes are paid is called net profit. A large revenue does not always mean a large profit, because costs may also be large, so for the owner profit matters more than revenue. Profit is the entrepreneur’s reward for taking risk, a “thermometer” of the firm’s condition, and a signal of what is more worthwhile to produce. There are two ways to raise profit: increase revenue or reduce costs. Profit is used for taxes, for developing production (investment), and for owners and shareholders as dividends.
Worked examples
A print shop put pictures on 2 000 mugs in a month and sold each for 35 000 so‘m. TR = 35 000 · 2 000 = 70 000 000 so‘m. If total cost was 52 000 000 so‘m, then P = 70 000 000 − 52 000 000 = 18 000 000 so‘m profit.
The next month, with the same revenue, costs rose to 76 000 000 so‘m: P = 70 000 000 − 76 000 000 = −6 000 000 so‘m, that is a loss of 6 mln so‘m. At a conditional tax rate of 15%, 2 700 000 so‘m of tax is paid on the first month’s profit of 18 mln so‘m, so net profit is 15 300 000 so‘m.
Class activity
“Revenue or profit?” Two firm cards are given: firm A — revenue 90 mln, costs 85 mln; firm B — revenue 50 mln, costs 30 mln. Students say who is doing better, calculate the profit and discuss the question “Is high revenue enough?”
Practice
1
450 products were sold at 20 000 so‘m each. What is the total revenue in so‘m?
9000000
2
Total revenue is 54 mln and total cost 61 mln so‘m. Did the firm make a profit or a loss? How much?
a loss of 7 mln so‘m
3
Profit is 18 mln so‘m and the conditional tax rate is 15%. What is the net profit in so‘m?
15300000
4
Why can profit fall even if revenue has risen?
Because costs may rise faster than revenue; profit is the difference between them, so that difference can shrink.
