Activity of political parties
A political party is a voluntary association formed on the basis of shared views and aims, which seeks to take part in running state and public affairs through its elected representatives. In its programme a party sets out its aims and ways to solve society’s problems, puts forward candidates at elections and tries to win voters’ support. A multi-party system gives the citizen a choice among different programmes and candidates and hinders power from gathering in the hands of one group. Parties work on the basis of the law “On political parties” and their charter; parties aiming to change the constitutional order by force, promoting war or hatred, and parties based on nationality or religion are forbidden. Judges, prosecutors, staff of internal affairs and security services, military servicemen and foreign citizens cannot be party members. Today five political parties are registered in Uzbekistan: the Liberal Democratic Party of Uzbekistan, the “Milliy tiklanish” (National Revival) Democratic Party, the People’s Democratic Party of Uzbekistan, the “Adolat” (Justice) Social Democratic Party and the Ecological Party of Uzbekistan; after the 2024 elections all of them have a faction in the Legislative Chamber.
“Programme defence”: groups prepare an imaginary party name and a three-point programme for improving school life, then the class votes. In discussion the content of the programme is judged, not the people.
