A candidate must be at least 35, know the state language and be a citizen who has permanently lived in Uzbekistan for at least 10 years before the election. The President signs laws, issues decrees and resolutions, nominates the Prime Minister, appoints important officials (some with the Senate’s confirmation), is Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, decides on citizenship and pardon, and may declare a state of emergency. The President’s person is inviolable and protected by law.
