Explanation

According to the textbook, the soul is a very complex idea: things connected with it are hard to know and can only be sensed with the heart. A writer does not only say what happened long ago but shows what the people who lived through it felt. Events may grow old with time, but a person’s inner traits do not, which is why works give great attention to portraying the inner world. Without such portrayal even an interesting event cannot make a work valuable. In “Ulug‘bek xazinasi” every character’s deeds and words match his state of mind: even the cruel and ambitious Abdullatif does not find it easy to rise against his father, and the inner life of both father and son is shown believably. In Alpomish, Oybarchin’s sharp words overturned the hero’s spirit and filled him with strength.

Worked examples
Example: Abdullatif sees his own head on a gold tray in his dream – the dream reveals his inner fear. The writer shows fear not by saying “he was afraid” but through the dream.
Example: Alpomish’s sudden surge of strength in the wrestling is not an outer change but an inner turn: taunting words struck his pride and woke his strength.
Class activity

Find one place in the “Ulug‘bek xazinasi” or “Navoiy” passages that shows a character’s state of mind and explain it in three steps: what happened – what he felt – why.

Practice
1
What is meant by ruhiyat? Write in your own words.
2
Why do events grow old while the inner world does not?
3
Which inner state does Abdullatif’s dream show?
4
Why can an interesting event alone not make a work valuable?
