The stories “Qoplon” and “Sobiq”
“Qoplon” is a satirical story. The flatterer Qurbonboy gives director Tillayev a dog nicknamed Qoplon to win his favour. When Tillayev retires and a new director arrives, Qurbonboy presents both the dog and himself to the new boss. Tillayev says he recognises the dog — a remark that is really a barb aimed at Qurbonboy. The story exposes flattery and hypocrisy. “Sobiq” is based on humour and hyperbole: a man picking cotton at record levels is pulled into meetings, photo shoots and silly assignments instead of working in the field (for example congratulating a retiring firefighter, welcoming a wrestler who swallows melons, inspecting samsa sellers). As a result he becomes a “former” picker. The story laughs at giving oneself to show instead of work.
“Which is which?”: the class fills two tables: signs of satire in “Qoplon” / signs of humour in “Sobiq”.
