Explanation
Gianni Rodari was born on 23 October 1920 in Omegna, Italy, in a baker’s family. His father died early, so the boy grew up with his mother in hard conditions. In his youth he worked as a teacher and later turned to journalism. His first children’s book is called “Quvnoq she’rlar kitobi” (a book of merry poems). Rodari wrote tales, poems and stories for children and tried to develop imagination and cheerful thinking in them. For his work he received the most prestigious international prize in children’s literature, the Hans Christian Andersen Award. He died on 14 April 1980. His works have been translated into many languages, including Uzbek.
Worked examples
Example: because Rodari had been a teacher he knew what children find interesting and took it into account in his tales.
Example: a foreign writer’s work reaches us through translation; that is why a translator is also seen as a creator.
Class activity
