Explanation

Erkin Vohidov was born on 28 December 1936 in the Oltiariq district of the Fergana region. At about ten he lost his parents and grew up with his uncle in Tashkent. He learned the secrets of poetry in G‘ayratiy’s circle and studied at Tashkent State University. He was editor-in-chief of the magazine “Yoshlik”. His works include poetry collections (for example in the poem “Kamtarlik” a teapot bows to a cup), the dostons “Nido”, “Palatkada yozilgan doston”, “Quyosh maskani”, “Ruhlar isyoni”, and the plays “Oltin devor” and “Istanbul fojiasi”. The poet translated Yesenin’s poems and Goethe’s “Faust” into Uzbek; a four-volume selection of his works was published. Vohidov was awarded the title Hero of Uzbekistan and died on 30 May 2016 at the age of 79.

Worked examples
Example: 2016 − 1936 = 80, but his December birthday had not yet come, so he was 79.
Example: the poem “Kamtarlik” is about manners; a small image (the teapot’s bow) carries a big idea — a figurative meaning.
Class activity

“The poet’s path”: pupils write four titles of Vohidov and mark which is a doston and which is a play.
