Civic qualities: respect
Textbook pp. 9–10
GoalUnderstand what respect is and why we show it to everyone.
New words
respect · hurmatcommunication · muloqotdifference · farq
Explanation
It is easy to respect elderly people. But in fact everyone deserves respect: adults and children, the lucky and those who have not yet achieved anything. Respect means valuing a person even if they are not like us or we dislike their opinion. People are different: one draws well, another is good at sport, another at numbers. If they respect each other, these differences stop being weaknesses and become strengths: together everyone can do what no one could do alone. Respect is a bridge that connects different people.
Worked examples
“The new pupil”. A new boy named Sherzod came to the class. He spoke slowly and asked many questions. Some children laughed. Dilshod, however, sat next to him at break and explained the class rules. A week later Sherzod drew interesting pictures for everyone. Thanks to respect, the class gained a new friend.
Class activity
“Strengths”: each child writes one of their strengths on paper. The teacher shuffles the papers and reads them out; the class guesses whose it is and says a kind word to that person.
