Explanation

Every people has its own holidays. Navruz is the holiday of spring’s arrival and nature waking up; in Uzbekistan it is celebrated on 21 March. On these days people wish each other well, visit elderly people and relatives, those who have quarrelled make peace, and sumalak is cooked in big pots. Sabantuy is the spring holiday of the Tatar people with national wrestling and tug-of-war games. Sollal is the Korean New Year, when families gather around the table. The holidays differ, but they have things in common: family gatherings, tasty food, games and good wishes.

Worked examples
“The holiday table”. At Navruz Nargiza visited her grandmother. In the yard sumalak was simmering in a big pot and neighbours took turns stirring. Nargiza joined in. In the evening neighbours carried sumalak to each other. Nargiza felt that a holiday is not just tasty food but a day that brings people closer.
Class activity
