Explanation
Let us recall: the 2, 3, 4 and 5 times tables; division is the inverse of multiplication; “n times more” means multiply, “n times fewer” means divide; “n more” means add, “n fewer” means subtract. In expressions calculate brackets first, then multiplication and division, then addition and subtraction.
Worked examples
30 + (30 × 2) = 30 + 60 = 90.
(81 − 53) : 4 = 28 : 4 = 7.
Class activity
“Card game”: two children take turns putting down a card with a product. The product must be bigger than the one before, otherwise the player passes.
