Explanation

To make a number n times bigger we multiply it by n. 4 made 3 times bigger is 4 × 3 = 12. Be careful: “3 times more” means multiply, “3 more” means add. 4 made 3 more is 4 + 3 = 7.

Worked examples
8 guests came to Salim’s birthday and 3 times as many to his grandfather’s: 8 × 3 = 24 guests.
7 made 2 times bigger is 14, and 7 made 2 more is 9.
Class activity

“Times or more?”: the teacher reads phrases (“5 more”, “5 times as many”). Children hold up a “+” or “×” card, then calculate.
