Explanation

The 6 times table comes from counting in sixes: 6, 12, 18, 24, 30, 36, 42, 48, 54, 60. We already know many products from earlier tables: 6 × 4 = 4 × 6 = 24. Replacing equal addends with multiplication makes calculation easier.

Worked examples
If 6 people sit at a table, 5 tables seat 6 × 5 = 30 people.
28 + (8 + 8 + 8 + 8 + 8 + 8) = 28 + 8 × 6 = 28 + 48 = 76.
Class activity

“Count in sixes”: children count in sixes up to 60. Each child in turn says one product from the table and shows it with sticks.
