Solving word problems

Textbook: Part 2, lesson 57, pp. 34–35
GoalSolve problems from tables and short statements; find an unknown number.
New words
table · jadvalshop · do‘konsack · qopin total · jami
Explanation

Take the numbers you need from the table and decide what is asked. “In total” – add; “how many more” – subtract. “Which number plus 87 gives 678?” – x + 87 = 678, so x = 678 − 87 = 591.

Worked examples
A warehouse has 950 kg of flour. 224 kg were sold on day 1 and 206 kg on day 2: 224 + 206 = 430 kg. Left: 950 − 430 = 520 kg.
From which number must we subtract 171 to get 385? x − 171 = 385, so x = 385 + 171 = 556.
Class activity

“Table masters”: draw a sales table for two shops and two months. Groups write their own questions about the table and pass them to another group to solve.

Practice
1
In January shop 1 sold 235 sacks of potatoes and shop 2 sold 227. How many sacks in total?
2
In February shop 1 sold 164 sacks and shop 2 sold 172. How many more did shop 2 sell?
3
How many sacks did both shops sell in the two months? (235, 227, 164, 172)
4
Which number plus 87 gives 678?
