Comparing three-digit numbers

Textbook: Part 2, lesson 47, pp. 14–15
GoalCompare three-digit numbers place by place.
New words
comparing · taqqoslashgreater · kattasmaller · kichikequal · teng
Explanation

To compare two three-digit numbers, first look at the hundreds: the number with more hundreds is greater. If they are equal, compare the tens; if those are equal too, compare the ones. 489 > 432 because the hundreds are equal and 8 tens > 3 tens.

Worked examples
734 and 698: 7 hundreds > 6 hundreds, so 734 > 698.
460 and 468: hundreds and tens are equal, 0 ones < 8 ones, so 460 < 468.
Class activity

“Who is bigger?”: two children each build a three-digit number from digit cards. They put them side by side and explain place by place whose number is greater. The owner of the greater number wins.
