Latitudinal zonality and sectoriality of the geographic envelope
Textbook: pp. 29–32
GoalDistinguish latitudinal zonality, sectoriality and azonality, explain their causes and how they appear in Uzbekistan.
Latitudinal zonality is the regular change of nature's components and geosystems from the equator to the poles; its main cause is the change in the angle of the Sun's rays because the Earth is round. The largest zonal units are climatic belts, within which natural zones are distinguished by the ratio of heat and moisture; each has its own soils, plants and animals. Dokuchaev laid the foundations of the law of zonality. Sectoriality is the change of climate (maritime, temperate continental, sharply continental and so on) and the corresponding nature from the ocean toward the interior of a continent. Azonality does not obey zonality and is linked to the Earth's inner processes and local factors: rocks, relief, groundwater and human activity. Examples are swamps, saline flats, riverside tugai thickets and oases created in deserts by bringing in water. Although most of Uzbekistan lies in the desert zone, its people and large cities are concentrated mainly in oases. Zonal and azonal features act together everywhere, which is why nature is so varied.
Worked examples
The Kyzylkum lies in the desert zone, but along the Amu Darya and Syr Darya groundwater is near the surface and moisture is higher, so a tugai of trees and shrubs grows there. This is an azonal, not a zonal, landscape.
In the west of Europe (near the ocean) the climate is mild and wet, and farther east toward the interior of Asia winters are colder and rainfall less. This is a change linked not to latitude but to distance from the ocean, that is, sectoriality.
Class activity
“Zonal or azonal?”: the teacher shows landscape cards (tundra, cotton field in an oasis, swamp, taiga, saline flat, tugai); students sort them into “zonal” and “azonal” columns and give reasons.
Practice
1
What causes latitudinal zonality?
Because the Earth is round, the angle of the Sun's rays changes from the equator to the poles, so heat and moisture are distributed in zones.
2
Classify as zonal or azonal: sandy desert, saline flat, orchard in an oasis, permafrost tundra.
Zonal: sandy desert, tundra. Azonal: saline flat (relief and salts), orchard in an oasis (people and water).
3
Which features change from the ocean toward the interior of a continent in the temperate belt because of sectoriality? Name two.
Rainfall decreases; the yearly temperature range grows (colder winters, hotter summers), so forest gives way to steppe and desert.
4
Why, although Uzbekistan lies in the desert zone, are most large cities in oases?
Because oases have river or canal water, irrigated soil becomes fertile and conditions are favourable for farming and settlement.
