Explanation
World population grew slowly for a long time because both births and deaths were high. It reached about 1 billion in the early 19th century, and after the middle of the 20th century growth accelerated sharply: 3 billion in the 1960s, 7 billion in 2011 and 8 billion in 2022; it is now roughly 8.2 billion. Such a sharp rise is called the demographic explosion; its cause is falling death rates thanks to better medicine and living standards. Natural increase = birth rate − death rate (per 1000 people, ‰). By demographic transition theory a society passes through four stages: 1) births and deaths high, growth low; 2) deaths fall sharply, explosion; 3) births begin to fall; 4) births and deaths low, growth minimal. In developed countries growth is very low and in some places population is shrinking; in Africa birth rates and growth remain high. States carry out demographic policy: measures to slow or raise growth.
Worked examples
If the birth rate is 30 ‰ and the death rate 9 ‰, natural increase is 30 − 9 = 21 ‰ (2.1%). Such a country is near stage 2 of the demographic transition.
In a country of 40 million with natural increase of 15 ‰, 40 000 000 × 15 ÷ 1000 = 600 000 people are added in a year. This raises the need for schools, hospitals and jobs.
Class activity
“Population line”: students mark the population for 1800, 1960, 2011 and 2022 (1; 3; 7; 8 billion) on a timeline and show the speed of growth in each interval with coloured arrows.
Practice
1
What is the demographic explosion and what is its main cause?
A sharp rise in population; the main cause is falling death rates through better medicine and living standards.
2
The birth rate is 26 ‰ and the death rate 8 ‰. What is natural increase in ‰? (Number only.)
18
3
In a country of 50 million with natural increase of 12 ‰, how many people are added a year? (Number only.)
600000
4
Why does the birth rate begin to fall in stage 3 of the demographic transition?
Because urbanisation, industrialisation, spreading education and medicine and changes in women's social roles reduce family size.
