Explanation

The Earth's interior has three main shells: the crust, the mantle and the core. The crust is on average 35–40 km thick under the continents and 5–10 km under the oceans, and it is separated from the mantle by the Moho boundary. The mantle reaches about 2900 km depth and makes up most of the Earth's volume, while the core is divided into an outer (liquid) and an inner (solid) part. The crust together with the solid upper part of the mantle forms the lithosphere, which is split by deep faults into large plates that move over the asthenosphere at a few centimetres per year. Earthquakes and volcanoes are frequent where plates collide or pull apart; such areas are called seismic belts, the largest being the Pacific “Ring of Fire” and the Alpine–Himalayan belt. Because Uzbekistan lies in the Alpine–Himalayan seismic belt, the country sometimes has noticeable earthquakes. Earthquake strength is assessed on a 12-point scale, and a volcano consists of a crater, a vent and a magma chamber.

Worked examples
If a plate moves 5 cm a year, in 1 million years it travels 5 × 1 000 000 = 5 000 000 cm, that is 50 km (100 000 cm = 1 km). That is why continents change their positions noticeably over geological time.
The distance to the Earth's centre is about 6371 km and the mantle boundary lies at 2900 km depth. So the core's radius is about 6371 − 2900 = 3471 km, which shows the core is over half of the Earth's radius.
Class activity

“Earthquake safety”: led by the teacher, the class practises safe actions (get under a desk, protect head and neck, leave the building in order after the shaking, go to the assembly point). Nothing is broken or damaged.

Practice
1
Name Earth's three main inner shells from the outside in.
2
If a plate moves 4 cm a year, how many km does it travel in 10 million years? (Number only; 100 000 cm = 1 km.)
3
Why are earthquakes and volcanoes frequent around the Pacific coasts?
4
If you are in a building during an earthquake, what is safer? Write three rules.
