The Tanakh is the main sacred text (Torah, Nevi’im, Ketuvim). The Talmud is a collection of traditional commentary and discussion.

The Silk Road linked trading cities. Jewish merchants and craftsmen (for example dyers) settled in Merv, Bukhara and Samarkand along it. In this way the communities spread.
