Xenophobia and religion
Answers are for parents and teachers.
1
Write three types of xenophobia with one example each.
Ethnic – against a nationality; racial – by skin colour; religious – antisemitism or Islamophobia (examples from historical events).
2
Explain the difference between a stereotype and a reasoned opinion with one example.
A stereotype treats a whole group as the same. An opinion is a judgement based on evidence and facts.
3
How can the media increase or reduce xenophobia? Give two examples of each.
Increase: one-sided headlines, stereotyped portrayals. Reduce: fact-based reporting, balanced material about different communities.
4
What do the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948) and the Constitution have in common regarding freedom of conscience?
Both recognise everyone’s freedom of conscience and belief and prohibit discrimination.
5

The answer is open; for example a class exhibition about different festivals or a “getting to know each other” hour.
