My school uniform: adjective order

Connect Primary 5 Term 1, Unit 3: pp. 44–51
GoalPut adjectives in order and write about a school uniform.
New words
uniform · special clothes for a school or a jobopinion · what you think, such as lovelymaterial · what something is made of, such as cottontailor · a person who makes clothes
Explanation

When we use more than one adjective, we put them in the right order: opinion, size, age, colour, material. We say a lovely small new blue cotton shirt. We do not say a cotton blue shirt. Look at the table and use it to write about a school uniform. Materials: cotton, wool, leather and silk. Maths corner: multiply two-digit numbers. A tailor makes 24 shirts a day. In 15 days he makes 24 × 15 = 360 shirts.

Worked examples
cottonwool
Look at the cloth. Cotton and wool feel different.

My school uniform is smart. The boys wear a pale blue cotton shirt and dark blue trousers. The girls wear a long navy skirt. We all wear black leather shoes and white socks. When it is cold, we put on a warm grey wool sweater. I like my uniform because it is comfortable.

Read and listen to the model text.
Salma

I want a nice big white cotton shirt.

Mum

Good order! Opinion, size, colour, material.

Salma

And my old blue cotton skirt is too short now.

Listen. Salma and her mum choose a new uniform shirt.
Now you. Say five things you wear to school with two adjectives each.
Class activity

Dress the doll. Draw a child in school uniform. Label each piece with two or three adjectives in the right order, for example a new white cotton shirt. Read the labels aloud to the grown-up.
