A day trip: stalls and handicrafts
A day trip is a visit that begins and ends on the same day. Cairo is the capital of Egypt. Khan el-Khalili is a famous old market in Cairo. People wander there and look at the stalls. A stall is a small shop with a table or a cloth. Many stalls sell handicrafts. Handicrafts are things that people make with their hands, such as lamps, bags and baskets. Some of them are traditional, which means they come from old ways of making things. At home, read the story on pages 80–81 of your Student Book. Then say if you would like to go to the place in the story, and why.
Where did your class go on Thursday, Mona?
We went on a day trip to an old market in Cairo.
What did you see?
We wandered between the stalls and saw traditional lamps and baskets.
Our class went on a day trip to Cairo. Cairo is the capital of Egypt. We wandered in an old market with narrow streets. Some stalls sold lamps, bags and bowls. All of them were handicrafts. A man showed us how he made a small tray with a hammer. We did not buy anything, but we took a lot of photos. It was a lovely day.
Market stall game. Put six things on a table, such as a pencil, a bag, a cup, a basket, a scarf and a lamp. One person is the seller and says: This is a traditional basket. It is a handicraft. The other is the tourist and asks: How much is it? The seller says a price in Egyptian pounds, for example 30 pounds. Then change places.
