Who is who? Describing characters
A character is a person or an animal in a story. To describe a character, give three facts: who the character is, what the character does and how the character feels or is. In ‘The Blue Piece’, Yara is a girl. She tells her brother to wait. She is careful. Adel is her brother. He sees the blue piece. He is curious and excited. Mr Sabry is the ranger. He looks at the piece and calls a scientist. He is calm and helpful. For each fact we can use a sentence with is, does or feels. At home, read the end of the story on pages 94–95 of your Student Book and say who you like best.
| Character | Who | What | How |
|---|---|---|---|
| Yara | a girl | tells Adel to wait | careful |
| Adel | her brother | sees the blue piece | curious |
| Mr Sabry | a ranger | calls the scientist | calm and helpful |
| the archaeologist | a scientist | studies old things | kind |
Who is Yara?
She is a girl. She tells her brother to wait.
How is she?
She is careful and kind.
The next day the archaeologist came back with two students. First they put a rope around the place, so nobody could walk on it. Then they dug very slowly with small brushes and spoons. Yara and Adel watched from the path and took notes. After that the students found more pieces, and they put them in a box. At last the archaeologist put the pieces together on a table. It was a small blue bowl! ‘People used it to eat from a long time ago,’ she said. The bowl went to a museum, and Yara and Adel visited it with their class.
Guess who. One person describes a character with three facts but does not say the name: She is a girl. She tells her brother to wait. She is careful. The other person guesses: Yara! Play with all the characters, then with characters from a story you like.
