Go, show, boy, right: vowel sounds; estimating
Some words have a sound that moves, like go, make, boy and bike. Listen to the four sounds: the sound in go, the sound in make, the sound in boy and the sound in bike. The same sound can have different spellings: eight and ate sound the same, and so do right and write. Now think about numbers. An estimate is not the exact answer, but it is close. Round each number to the nearest ten. If the last digit is 0, 1, 2, 3 or 4, stay on the lower ten. If it is 5, 6, 7, 8 or 9, go up. Then add: 28 + 53 is about 30 + 50, so it is about 80.

Sound sort. Write twelve words on cards: go, show, make, play, boy, toy, bike, time, grow, bake, coin, right. The child reads each card and puts it in one of four groups by sound. Then estimate: the grown-up says two numbers, for example 42 and 38, and the child rounds and says: It is about 80.
