Phonics: ou and ow; tally charts
Connect P3 Term 1: Unit 6
GoalRead words with ou and ow, and read a tally chart.
New words
ou · the sound in cloud, mouse, mouthow · the sound in clown, cow, flowertally · a mark for each thing we countchart · a picture that shows numberstotal · all the things added together
Explanation
The letters ou and ow can make the same sound: ow, like in cloud and clown. Read: cloud, mouse, mouth, house. Read: clown, cow, flower, owl. Now we learn to count with a tally chart. We make one line for each thing. After four lines, the fifth line goes across them. A group of five lines is easy to count.
Worked examples
Listen and say the ow words. Find the letters ow in each word.
Look at the tally chart. The children vote for their favourite circus person. How many votes for the clown?
A brown cow stands near the house. A little mouse looks at a yellow flower. An owl sits in a tree under the cloud. The clown shouts and the cow runs away.
Now you. Ask ten friends or family members: Which colour do you like? Make a tally chart.
Class activity
Class survey. The child asks ten people (family, neighbours, friends) a question: What is your favourite fruit? The child makes a tally mark for every answer on paper and writes the total for each fruit. Then the child says: Most people like … . Fewest people like … .
