Explanation

A full greeting follows one path: greet, ask, answer, ask back, and say goodbye. Think about who you speak to, a man or a woman, and change the ending of ุฅูุฒูŽู‘ูŠูŽู‘ูƒ, ู…ูู† ููŽุถู’ู„ูŽูƒ and ุชูุตู’ุจูŽุญ ุนูŽู„ูŽู‰ ุฎูŽูŠู’ุฑ. For goodbye, say ู…ูŽุนูŽ ุงู„ุณูŽู‘ู„ูŽุงู…ูŽุฉ; the other person answers with the same words. Many Egyptians first say ูŠูŽู„ูŽู‘ุง, โ€œOK, let's goโ€, before they leave. These phrases work in a shop, at a door or on the phone.

Class activity

Write a short conversation of six lines between a man and a woman. Start with ุตูŽุจูŽุงุญ ุงู„ุฎูŽูŠู’ุฑ or ู…ูŽุณูŽุงุก ุงู„ุฎูŽูŠู’ุฑ. Use ุฅูุฒูŽู‘ูŠูŽู‘ูƒ or ุฅูุฒูŽู‘ูŠูู‘ูƒ, one answer, ูˆูุฅูู†ู’ุชูŽ or ูˆูุฅูู†ู’ุชููŠ, and ู…ูŽุนูŽ ุงู„ุณูŽู‘ู„ูŽุงู…ูŽุฉ. Read both parts aloud.

Practice
1
Which greeting is for the evening: ุตูŽุจูŽุงุญ ุงู„ุฎูŽูŠู’ุฑ or ู…ูŽุณูŽุงุก ุงู„ุฎูŽูŠู’ุฑ?
2
Listen. Is this said in the morning or before bed, and to whom?
3
You are a woman. Say โ€œI'm fine, thank Godโ€.
4
You meet this woman. How do you ask her โ€œhow are you?โ€
5
Say โ€œthank youโ€ and โ€œgoodbyeโ€.
