Explanation

Egyptians greet with ุฃูŽู‡ู’ู„ู‹ุง, โ€œhelloโ€, or with ุงู„ุณูŽู‘ู„ูŽุงู…ู ุนูŽู„ูŽูŠู’ูƒูู…. The reply to the second one is ูˆูŽุนูŽู„ูŽูŠู’ูƒูู… ุงู„ุณูŽู‘ู„ูŽุงู…. To ask โ€œhow are you?โ€ you must know if you speak to a man or a woman. ุฅูุฒูŽู‘ูŠูŽู‘ูƒ is for a man and ุฅูุฒูŽู‘ูŠูู‘ูƒ is for a woman: only the last vowel changes. ุนูŽุงู…ูู„ ุฅููŠู‡ (to a man) and ุนูŽุงู…ู’ู„ูŽุฉ ุฅููŠู‡ (to a woman) are just as common. Both are Egyptian: standard Arabic says ูƒูŽูŠู’ููŽ ุญูŽุงู„ููƒูŽ.

A greeting and its reply.
Class activity

Greet three people today in Arabic: a family member, a friend, and yourself in a mirror. Say ุฅูุฒูŽู‘ูŠูŽู‘ูƒ to men and ุฅูุฒูŽู‘ูŠูู‘ูƒ to women. Write both forms on a sticky note and put it on your phone.

Practice
1
You meet this person. Do you say ุฅูุฒูŽู‘ูŠูŽู‘ูƒ or ุฅูุฒูŽู‘ูŠูู‘ูƒ?
2
Ask this person โ€œhow are you doing?โ€.
3
Listen. A girl says her name. Which name do you hear: Salma, Sara or Hana?
4
What do you answer to ุงู„ุณูŽู‘ู„ูŽุงู…ู ุนูŽู„ูŽูŠู’ูƒูู…?
5
Why does Egyptian have two forms of โ€œhow are you?โ€
