Explanation
To say “my”, add ī to the end of the noun: ʾumm becomes ʾummī, “my mother”, and ʾukht becomes ʾukhtī, “my sister”. To say “your”, add uk: ʾummuk, ʾukhtuk. A man and a woman hear the same -uk in this course; the full forms are -uka and -uki. You know this pattern from ism: ismī and ismuk. Two words change a little. ʾAb and ʾakh become ʾabī and ʾakhī for “my”, but ʾabūk and ʾakhūk for “your”, with a long ū (the form used at the start of a sentence).

Class activity
Photo talk. Take photos of your family or pictures of people from a magazine. Pretend they are your family and say ʾabī, ʾummī, ʾakhī, ʾukhtī as you point. Then show a photo to a friend and say ʾabūk or ʾukhtuk. Write one short sentence under each photo, for example ʾakhī ṭālib, with all the vowels.

أَخِي and أَخُوك
3
Add “my” to بِنْت (daughter).
بِنْتِي (bintī), “my daughter”.
4
What is special about “father” in “your father”?
ʾab becomes ʾabūk, with a long ū, not ʾabuk.
