Explanation

These words name the people in a family. ʾAb is “father” and ʾumm is “mother”. ʾAkh is “brother” and ʾukht is “sister”. A son is ibn and a daughter is bint. The whole family is ʾusra. You already know jadd and jadda, “grandfather” and “grandmother”, from unit 6. Each pair is a male and a female word: read them together and listen to the sounds. Take care with ʾakh: the last sound is kh, like the end of Scottish “loch”.
