Review: sorting and filtering data
Textbook: p. 127
GoalCombines sorting, filtering and formulas to build a table from own data and uses it responsibly.
New words

Explanation
In review tasks a table is usually prepared in this order: build and format a table with headers, calculate with formulas (age = current year – birth year, average = total : count), then sort in the order needed and filter by a condition. For example, add a “group” column to a table of subjects, write 1 for natural sciences and 2 for social sciences, sort by group and then subject name, and filter those with an average of at least 4. After sorting, check the result: does each row still keep its own data, and are the formulas right? Do not post a table with classmates’ personal data such as names and birth dates openly on the internet, and when sharing it in a cloud service set the permission to “view only”; made-up data can be used for practice too.
Worked examples
Age: if the birth year is 2012 and the current year 2026, the formula =C2-B2 gives 14. If the current year is in a separate cell, next year only that cell needs changing.
Subjects: Algebra 5, History 4, Physics 3, Literature 4, Chemistry 2. The filter “at least 4” keeps Algebra, History and Literature (3 records).
Class activity
“Imaginary class”: a group builds a table of 6 made-up pupils, calculates the age column, sorts, filters and discusses why made-up data is safer.
Practice
1
If the birth year is 2012 and the current year 2026, what does the age formula give?
14
2
What is the average of the marks 4, 5, 3 and 4?
4
3
The subject marks are 5, 4, 3, 4, 2. How many subjects remain after the filter “at least 4”?
3
4
Why should a table with classmates’ names and birth dates not be put on the open internet?
Strangers could use the data to harm or trick people; personal data must be protected.
