Textbook: pp. 11–15
GoalKnows the generations of computers, the main and additional devices, and the roles of the processor and memory.
New words
generation: a stage in computer development defined by its main electronic element · avlodprocessor (CPU): the device that executes instructions and does arithmetic and logic operations · protsessorRAM: fast memory that holds programs and data while the computer works; erased when power is off · tezkor xotira (RAM)ROM: read-only memory that keeps permanent information such as the start-up program · doimiy xotira (ROM)
Explanation
Electronic computers are divided into four generations: 1st on vacuum tubes (1946–1955), 2nd on transistors (1956–1965), 3rd on integrated circuits (1966–1974) and 4th on large-scale integrated circuits and microprocessors (from 1975). The transistor was made in 1947 at Bell Laboratories by Shockley, Bardeen and Brattain (Nobel Prize 1956); it sharply reduced the size and power use of machines. A computer is a universal automatic device that processes information at high speed under a program. Its main devices are the system unit, monitor and keyboard; additional devices include the mouse, printer, scanner, webcam and others. The system unit holds the motherboard, processor, memory and power supply. The processor performs arithmetic and logic operations and controls the other devices; its performance depends on clock frequency (GHz), bit width and number of cores. RAM holds programs and data while the computer works and loses them when power is off; ROM keeps the start-up program (BIOS/UEFI) that runs when the computer is switched on. 8 bits = 1 byte; an address bus of n bits can express 2ⁿ addresses.
Worked examples
Memory units: 4 GB of RAM = 4 · 1,024 = 4,096 MB = 4,096 · 1,024 = 4,194,304 KB. Each larger unit is 1,024 times the previous one.
A phone camera takes a 4000×3000-pixel photo, needing 3 bytes (24 bits) per pixel: 4000 · 3000 · 3 = 36,000,000 bytes (about 34 MB uncompressed). That is why photos are stored compressed in formats such as JPEG.
Class activity
“Generation line-up”: each pupil gets one generation card (element, years, example) and the class lines up in the correct order.
Practice
1
What element were 2nd-generation computers built on and what did it change?
The transistor; machines became smaller, used less energy and became faster.
2
How many different codes (addresses) can be made with 20 bits?
1048576
3
A tablet screen is 1200×800 pixels with 4 bytes (32 bits) per pixel. How many bytes does one frame take?
3840000
4
Why is a document lost if you switch the computer off without saving it?
Because the open document is in RAM, which is cleared when power is lost.
