Computer hardware

Textbook: pp. 16–21
GoalKnows storage media (hard disk, SSD, flash, optical disc), input and output devices and their properties.
New words
hard disk drive: storage with magnetic disks spinning inside a sealed case · qattiq disk (HDD)solid-state drive: storage built from flash chips with no moving parts · SSDpixel: one dot of the screen image; monitor resolution is the number of pixels · pikselmultimedia: technology that combines text, sound, pictures and video · multimedia
Explanation

The hard disk drive (HDD) is the computer’s main permanent storage: it holds the operating system, programs and user files; data is written magnetically and the disk is divided into tracks and sectors. The first Winchester drive was made by IBM in 1973. Today SSDs are common: they are made of flash chips with no moving parts, so they are fast and shock-resistant. Portable media include USB flash drives, memory cards and optical discs (CD ≈ 700 MB, DVD ≈ 4.7 GB, Blu-ray ≈ 25 GB; read with a laser beam), while old floppy disks (1.44 MB) are no longer used. Output devices are the monitor (LCD/LED or OLED), printers (inkjet and laser) and plotters; input devices are the keyboard, mouse, scanner, webcam, microphone and touch screen. The screen image is made of pixels, and picture quality depends on the number of pixels (for example 1920×1080). Never open a computer or monitor case: dangerous voltages are inside, and repairs are for specialists.

Worked examples
A Blu-ray disc holds 25 GB = 25 · 1,024 = 25,600 MB. It fits 25,600 : 800 = 32 videos of 800 MB each.
Download time: at an internet speed of 10 MB/s, a 1,200 MB file takes 1,200 : 10 = 120 seconds, that is 2 minutes, to download.
Class activity

“Device market”: each team sorts device cards into “input”, “output” and “storage” columns; the rival team finds any wrongly placed card.

Practice
1
What is the main difference between an HDD and an SSD?
2
How many seconds does it take to download a 2 GB (= 2,048 MB) file at 16 MB/s?
3
How many 4 MB pictures fit into 4 GB (= 4·1,024 MB) of memory?
4
Why is it risky to pull out a flash drive without using “safely remove”?
