Explanation
A menu is a set of commands or actions. In Windows you work with four kinds of menu: the Start menu, the context menu opened with the right mouse button, program menus and the window control menu. Marks in menus: “...” at the end of an item opens a dialog box; a triangle (▶) opens a submenu; a light grey item is not available now; keys beside an item (for example Ctrl+C) are shortcut keys; an underlined letter lets you run the command while the menu is open. The Start menu opens with the Win key or the Start button: it holds pinned and all apps, recent files, a search box, Settings and the Power button. Search finds an app or file by part of its name; in the File Explorer search box, * in place of the name (*.docx) finds all files of that type. Win+R opens the Run window: typing calc (Calculator), notepad or mspaint (Paint) and pressing Enter starts that program. In Settings you change mouse speed, display, network and user accounts; a password on your account protects it from others.
Worked examples
Reading the marks: “Save as...” – a dialog box opens; “Send to ▶” – a submenu; “Copy Ctrl+C” – shortcut keys; a grey “Paste” – the Clipboard is empty.
Search: for a document you cannot find, type “*.docx” or a part of the name in the File Explorer search box. The results appear in a list and the document’s folder is shown too.
Class activity
“Symbol detectives”: the teacher shows a menu on screen; groups give the meaning of “...”, ▶, grey and shortcut-key marks and score a point for each correct answer.
Practice

What happens if you type “mspaint” in the Run window and press Enter?
The Paint drawing program starts.
2
What does “...” at the end of the menu item “Save as...” mean?
When this item is chosen a dialog box opens.
3
How can you tell that a menu item is not available now?
It is shown in light grey.
4
Why should you put a password on a user account?
So that others cannot open your files or change your settings.
