Practical lesson: external memory
Textbook: p. 67
GoalSafely carries out practical work with external memory (creating folders, copying, viewing properties, checking for errors, antivirus scan).
New words
properties: a window with a disk’s or file’s name, size, type and dates · xususiyatlar (Properties)error checking: an OS service that looks for and repairs file-system errors · xatolikka tekshirishbackup: a copy of data kept so that it can be restored after a loss · zaxira nusxacloud storage: storing files on internet servers so they are reachable from many devices · bulutli xotira
Explanation
In this practical lesson we copy files safely to a flash drive and practise the order for checking a disk. The first step is to plug in the flash drive and scan it with antivirus. Then we create a new folder on drive D:, select our own text file, copy it with Ctrl+C and paste it into a folder on the flash drive with Ctrl+V; we check the copy by comparing file sizes. The disk’s “Properties” window shows total capacity, used and free space; the “Tools” tab can run error checking and optimisation. A flash drive sold as 16 GB shows about 14.9 GB on a computer, because the maker counts 1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes while the OS counts 1 GB = 2³⁰ bytes. Format only with the teacher’s permission and only your own empty drive. Write the work in your notebook and draw a conclusion.
Worked examples
Copy sequence: select the file → Ctrl+C → open the flash drive folder → Ctrl+V → compare the sizes of both files.
Properties: if the disk is 14 GB and 6 GB is used, the free space is 14 – 6 = 8 GB.
Class activity
“Disk passport”: pairs fill in a table for a flash drive (file system, total size, used and free space, number of folders) and compare the results with the neighbouring pair.
Practice
1
Write in order the 5 stages of copying a file from a flash drive to a computer.
Plug in, scan with antivirus, select the file and press Ctrl+C, press Ctrl+V in a folder on the computer, safely eject.
2
The disk is 32 GB with 12 GB used. How many GB are free?
20
3
Why does a 16 GB flash drive show 14.9 GB on a computer?
The maker counts 1 GB as 10⁹ bytes, the OS as 2³⁰ bytes.
4
Name two ways to keep a backup.
Copy to another external drive; upload to cloud storage.
