Explanation

A novel is a long prose (epic) work in which a person’s fate is shown broadly against the life of society. Unlike the story and the novella, it has many characters, and its events cover a long time and a wide space. By theme a novel can be historical, military, modern, adventure-fantasy and socio-philosophical: for example, “O‘tkan kunlar” is historical, “Quyosh qoraymas” military and “Sariq devni minib” an adventure novel. If the scale of events is large, the author divides the novel into several books. A two-book novel is called a dilogy, a three-book one a trilogy, a four-book one a tetralogy; a form of more than four books is considered a cycle of novels. “Ufq” is an example of a trilogy, Tohir Malik’s “Shaytanat” of a tetralogy, and Romain Rolland’s ten-volume “Jean-Christophe” of a cycle. An epopee is defined not by the number of books but by the breadth of events covered and by the portrayal of the fates of many generations; Balzac’s “The Human Comedy” and Ayniy’s “Qullar” are such works.

Worked examples
Example: in the “Ufq” trilogy the first book covers life before the war and the canal building, the second the heroism in war and on the home front, the third the fates after the war.
Example: “Jean-Christophe” is a cycle because it has ten volumes; “The Human Comedy” is an epopee not by the number of books but by many generations and wide scope.
Class activity

Ask three classmates or family members about novels they have read and place them in a table by theme and number of books.
