“Nur va soyalar”: the trial and the meeting
Textbook: Part 2, pp. 166–175
GoalRetell sections V–X of the story “Nur va soyalar” (Giribala’s hurt, the fishermen’s incident, the sentence and the reunion) and explain its idea.
While preparing for court, Shoshibushon pays no attention to the plums and flowers the girl brings, and Giribala is hurt; then the steward withdraws the complaint, he himself is appointed honorary judge in his district, and Giribala is prepared for marriage and not let out of the house. Travelling to Calcutta by river, Shoshibushon sees the English police chief cut the fishermen’s net and arrest four men, and in anger throws himself at him and beats him. In court the frightened fishermen take back their testimony and the steward does not help; Shoshibushon admits what he did and is sentenced to five years in prison and refuses an appeal. After release, homeless and alone, he is taken in an unknown carriage to a house with a library; on the table lies an old slate inscribed “To little Giribala”. Giribala in white clothes greets him with a bow, both weep unable to find words, and by the gate wandering singers sing “come back”. The story shows colonial injustice, a frightened and silent people, and the loyal heart of a person left alone on the path of truth.
Worked examples
Example: Shoshibushon knows the law well, but at the trial no one supports him: the proverb “if the claimant is weak, the judge is arrogant” comes true in the story.
Example: the nature description matches the state: the rainy season and the alternation of light and shadow express Shoshibushon’s alternation of happiness and misfortune; the title also means this.
