Ozod Sharafiddinov
Ozod Sharafiddinov was born on 1 March 1929 in the village of Oxunqaynar near Kokand, but his whole life was linked with Tashkent. He graduated from the Central Asian State University (now the National University of Uzbekistan) in 1951, defended his candidate dissertation in Moscow, and in 1955–1995 taught young people at that university. His first book “Zamon. Qalb. Poeziya” came out in 1962, and then he wrote dozens of books such as “Adabiy etudlar”, “Iste’dod jilolari” and “Adabiyot – hayot darsligi”. He also wrote about creators such as Cho‘lpon and Fitrat and made a great contribution to restoring and studying their heritage. From 1997 until the end of his life he was editor-in-chief of the journal “Jahon adabiyoti” and prepared 100 issues of it, and he translated masterpieces of world literature into Uzbek. He was given the orders “Mehnat shuhrati” (1997) and “Buyuk xizmatlari uchun” (1999) and the title “Hero of Uzbekistan” (2002); he died on 4 October 2005.
