Explanation

Said Ahmad (full name Saidahmad Husanxo‘jayev) was born in Tashkent in 1920; he studied at the Art School, then at the Tashkent pedagogical institute, which he finished in 1943. He began work at the journal “Mushtum”; for his humour-loving nature this journal was a creative school. His first book of stories “Tortiq” came out in 1940, and then he wrote nearly fifty books such as “Er yurak”, “Farg‘ona hikoyalari”, “Cho‘l burguti” and “Muhabbat”. Literary scholars call him a writer who combined Oybek’s psychological depiction, G‘afur G‘ulom’s humour and Abdulla Qahhor’s concise thought; his comedy “Kelinlar qo‘zg‘oloni” (1976) is famous. Among his novels “Jimjitlik” (1988) and the three-book trilogy “Ufq” (“Qirq besh kun”, “Hijron kunlarida”, “Ufq bo‘sag‘asida”) are especially well known. In the post-war years of repression he was unjustly accused of being an “enemy of the people” and imprisoned, and was cleared some years later; later he received the titles “People’s Writer of Uzbekistan” and “Hero of Uzbekistan”.
