Dividing by 8

Explanation

64 : 8 = 8, because 8 × 8 = 64. Numbers divisible by 8: 8, 16, 24, 32, 40, 48, 56, 64, 72, 80. To find an unknown dividend we multiply the quotient by the divisor: if x : 7 = 8 then x = 8 × 7 = 56.

Worked examples
56 : 8 = 7, because 7 × 8 = 56.
If 2 languages disappear every month, in 12 months 2 × 12 = 24 languages disappear.
Class activity

“Inside the table”: children divide the numbers of the 8 times table by 8 and notice that the quotients go from 1 to 10.
