Explanation

The 8 times table: 8, 16, 24, 32, 40, 48, 56, 64, 72, 80. A chess board has 8 × 8 squares: 8 rows of 8, so 64 squares. We find many products with the swap property: 8 × 6 = 6 × 8 = 48.

Worked examples
8 × 7 = 56 and 8 × 3 = 24.
5 kinds of sticks, 8 of each kind: 5 × 8 = 40 sticks.

“The chess board”: children draw an 8 × 8 board, count rows and columns and recite the 8 times table.
