Dividing by 7
Textbook: Part 3, lesson 108, pp. 78–79
GoalDivide by 7; find how many times one quantity is bigger or smaller than another.
New words
number divisible by 7 · 7 ga bo‘linadigan sonhow many times bigger · necha marta kattahow many times smaller · necha marta kichikbird feeder · donxo‘rak
Explanation
56 : 7 = 8, because 8 × 7 = 56. To find how many times one quantity is bigger or smaller than another we divide the bigger by the smaller. 12 is 12 : 3 = 4 times bigger than 3, and 3 is 4 times smaller than 12. 56 is 8 times bigger than 7.
Worked examples
28 = 7 × 4, so 28 is divisible by 7.
There are 7 bird feeders in the school yard and 14 outside: 14 : 7 = 2 times as many.
Class activity
“How many times?”: the teacher shows two piles (7 and 21 buttons). Children find how many times bigger the larger pile is by dividing.
